People & Lifestyle

Atlantic Beach is a laid-back coastal destination immediately adjacent to Jacksonville. Residents vote in Jacksonville’s mayor and city council elections, but the community also maintains its own municipal government. The community has a diverse appeal as both a beachy surfers’ haven and a historic seaside resort town.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Atlantic Boulevard runs east to west through Atlantic Beach on its path to the Atlantic Ocean. Beaches Town Center at the oceanfront end of Atlantic Boulevard features boutiques, fitness centers, restaurants, and hotels in an attractive outdoor space with courtyards and brick walkways. Azurea at the Beaches Town Center’s One Ocean Resort offers chic seafood fine dining and amazing ocean views. Ocean 60 brings Latin and Pacific flair to dishes prepared with ocean-fresh seafood. Ragtime Tavern pairs creative coastal cuisine with house-brewed beer and live music. Other businesses at Beaches Town Center include stylish womenswear boutiques such as AshleyGryre and Fig & Willow, watersports and beachwear store Jax Surf & Paddle, and unique island handicraft merchant Bali Cargo. Heading east along Atlantic Boulevard, Culhane’s Irish Pub is an upscale hangout that hosts karaoke, trivia, and live music.

Things to Do

Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park sits along Atlantic Beach’s northern border with the historic town of Mayport. Hanna Park rolls right down to the white sand beachfront. The park’s centerpiece is a 60-acre lake that is open for kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and paddleboating. With 20 miles of hiking and biking trails, the park also has around 300 campsites and a waterfront event space at Dolphin Pavilion. At the northern end of Hanna Park’s 1.5-mile beachfront, The Poles is the best surf spot in Northern Florida for experienced surfers. Howell Park is another captivating natural space with a 0.75-mile nature trail winding through a gorgeous landscape of ponds, streams, and forest. The St. Johns River Ferry provides unforgettable tours from Atlantic Beach to the barrier islands just off Florida’s Atlantic coast. Atlantic Beach’s proximity to Jacksonville makes it easy to visit attractions such as the Cummer Museum of Art and Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. Atlantic Beach is also close to sprawling natural areas such as Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. In January, the Stuart Boat Show features more than 175 exhibitors. This large annual event has been named one of the top 20 events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society.
